TCF 312 Reel and Artist Statement
I have always been interested in films since I was a little kid. I thought they were entertaining and wanted to watch more and more of them. It wasn't until I was in middle school that I wanted to learn all about how they were made. Films from directors like David Fincher, Michael Mann, and Wes Anderson have only made that desire stronger. I have always had a very detailed imagination and I tried my best in showing that in the assignments I did for this class. My end goal is to become a film critic but I feel that I can take all of what I know about making films and put that into my work.I believe that one should have somewhat of an understanding of how films are made in order to properly discuss them critically.
I like how your intention is to utilize your film knowledge to do something that is unique from shooting film.
ReplyDeleteI m with Will on this one! I like your different style of filmmaking!
ReplyDeleteGerry, you have some interesting framing! Also, at first I was bothered with the lack of music but thinking about it, this is what makes the shots work (specially the horror scene).
ReplyDeleteYou have some really good shots, though I wouldn't have lingered quite so long on the first one. The choice with the sound is an interesting one, but it was a bit jarring to be thrown from one environment to another without transition. Having a little ambient music underneath probably wouldn't have hurt much. Overall though, I like the use of light in your shots.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Hampton. Your lighting is great, it adds to the shots significantly. But I'm a little off put by the lack of continuous sound, It's confusing to go from absolutely no sound in one shot to screams in the next.
ReplyDeleteGood job. I think you should add a couple of different shots in there. I know you had some good stuff from the Documentary storytelling project that you DP'ed. I would definitely add music. It would add a lot and help things flow better. The purpose of a reel is to show your visual skills so the song from the scenes is not too important.
ReplyDeleteThe four shots you had were good at capturing your style, but I would have liked to see way more shots. Music would be a nice addition, as well.
ReplyDeleteI liked the shots, but I agree that a little bit of music would help with the overall pacing.
ReplyDeleteThey were nice shots but it would have been nice to see more and also, I agree that music would be nice.
ReplyDeleteGerry,
ReplyDeleteI know you can read everyone above me, so I won't harp on it. But, again... I think more shots and music would really add to your reel.
With that being said, what you do have looks really nice. They are all interesting compositions, yet pretty natural scenes... that can be tricky, but you have handled it well. Good work!
I liked the opening shot, and the length of it. Also the few right after it as well. After she says "There's someone in here, he's trying to kill me" I think music kicking in would have been good. Good choice of shots from those films, though! You really did choose the best ones. Best of luck to you, Gerry!!
